Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalayas (JNVs) are a group of schools run by the Navodaya Vidyalaya Samiti, an autonomous organization under the Ministry of Education, Government of India. The idea behind making these schools was to give talented kids from rural areas a good education. Despite being one of India’s most prestigious school chains, several myths and misconceptions surround JNVs.
This article will clear up some of the most common myths and misunderstandings about Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya.
Myth 1: JNVs are Only for Rural Students
One common misconception is that JNVs are exclusively for students from rural areas. While it is true that JNVs were established with a focus on rural talent, they are not exclusively for rural students. The admission process is open to all students, regardless of their background. However, there is a reservation of 75% seats for rural candidates and 25% for urban candidates.
See our reservation guide for JNVs here.
Myth 2: JNVs are Hindi Medium Schools
Another common myth is that JNVs are Hindi medium schools. This is not true. JNVs are co-educational residential schools that use both Hindi and English as mediums of instruction. English is generally used for teaching Science, Mathematics, and Social Sciences, while Hindi is used for other subjects. (From Class 6th to Class 8th JNVs follow Hindi Medium, then Class 9th Onwards English Medium will be applicable)
Myth 3: JNVs Lack Quality Infrastructure
Some people believe that JNVs lack quality infrastructure as they are government-run schools. This is a misconception. JNVs are well-equipped with modern facilities and amenities such as science laboratories, computer labs, libraries, sports facilities, and hostels. The government invests significant money to ensure that the students have access to quality infrastructure.
Myth 4: JNVs Do Not Provide Good Quality Education
This is one of the most common misconceptions about JNVs. In reality, JNVs provide high-quality education to their students. The teachers are well-qualified and undergo regular training to update their knowledge and teaching skills. The curriculum is comprehensive and designed to provide a strong foundation in all subjects. Moreover, the students of JNVs consistently perform well in various national and international competitions and examinations.
Myth 5: JNVs are Only for Science Students
It is a common misconception that JNVs are only for students who wish to pursue a career in science. While it is true that JNVs have a strong focus on science and mathematics, they also provide a well-rounded education in other subjects such as social sciences, languages, and arts. The curriculum is designed to develop the overall personality of the students and not just focus on one particular stream.
Myth 6: JNVs Do Not Focus on Extra-Curricular Activities
Contrary to popular belief, JNVs place a strong emphasis on extra-curricular activities. Students are encouraged to participate in various sports, music, dance, drama, and arts and crafts activities. These activities are integral to the curriculum and help the student’s overall development.
Myth 7: JNVs are Not Safe for Girls
This is a completely baseless myth. JNVs are co-educational schools with separate hostels for boys and girls. The safety and security of the students are of utmost importance, and all necessary measures are taken to ensure a safe and secure environment for the students. There are female staff members and wardens in the girls’ hostels, and strict rules and regulations are followed to ensure the safety of the students.
Why should you join Navodaya?
- Navodaya Vidyalaya are mainly introduced for rural/poor population of India, who can not afford the high fees of convent/international schools.
 - Navodaya Vidyalaya is there in every district of India (except Tamilnadu), And they have an entrance exam in classes 5 and 8 (to get admission in 6th and 9th class respectively).
 - The best 80 students get to enrol in this school every year. And most of them are facing their first competitive IQ exam of life.
 - In some of the districts, this is the only CBSE school available (Quality Education) at least at my time in 2004. I heard this CBSE word for the first time.

Now, look at the other part of it.
- These schools are directly run by MHRD and not any state body. You’re a part of the central government now.
 - You won’t get local school teachers there, but you get highly qualified teachers from different regions of the country.
 - Navodaya is giving you all 24 hours x 7 years of it, and so are you. You live there all the way long, so your teachers are with you, within the same campus. (Of course you get holidays). (But think it that way, living in a different place, with different kinds of people, at such an early stage of life!! Damn, early age preparation for the life. Cool)
 - Fact: In the cost of one Navodaya School, around 100–120 normal schools can be open. Because you’re getting a 7-year-long scholarship here. Not just the study part, but the living too. Uniforms, shoes, books, notebooks. (even toothpaste, toothbrushes, soap etc. Yep, I’m serious).

Few other things.
- Three-language system: You will be learning one more Indian regional language here, other than Hindi & English. And on the basis of your interest and availability, you will get a chance (9th class) to go to that place in the country to study what we call migration.
 - Sports: You’re here 24/7 on the school premises. One can easily nurture his/her dreams of sports according to one’s interests. Many of the students have played at the School Games Federation of India level.
 - Science exhibition: Annual Science Congress is organised annually in collaboration with the research institute at the regional level.
 - Food: Students will decide what should be on the food menu of the month (food taste may can’t meet your expectations). But don’t worry, your teachers will have the same food as you, which is tolerable.

Over and, it gives you lifelong memories and lifelong friends. Because being familiar with other people at an early stage of life is very rare for one. Once you are a friend with someone, it’s not for those 7 years. It is for a lifetime.
Conclusion
Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalayas are a prestigious institution that provides quality education to talented students from all backgrounds. It is important to be aware of the facts and not fall for the common myths and misconceptions surrounding these schools. By providing accurate information about JNVs, we can help more students take advantage of the excellent opportunities offered by these schools.

Good and Special
Thanks!
